What is your most defining characteristic? When people describe you, what kind of words do they use? We all like to think that we are the sole architect of our identity, but we receive hundreds of messages a day that shape how we see ourselves and the world around us.
John’s message (1 John 2:28—3:10) to his beloved friends is one of compassionate urgency: our internal identity is expressed in our external actions and sets the course for our eternity. This is a heavy reminder, but it is born out of encouragement to abide in the person and work of Jesus Christ and in his identity, rather than shrinking in shame from the messages of the world around us.
