How does the Holy Spirit help us?

At some point in your life, you have probably overestimated the value of your own independence. All children hit a phase where (though they need it desperately) they shun all adult attempts to help them. This natural desire for self-sufficiency is part of growing up – independence comes with maturity.

This developmental reality makes understanding our spiritual reality much more difficult. In John 14, Jesus frightens his disciples with the news of his return to the Father. But this is good news: we will receive the Holy Spirit, the help we all need—help that we will have, and need, forever.
