Redemptive Reversals 5
If you were to jump right now, you wouldn’t float off into the sky like a balloon—you would come back down to Earth! Why? Because the force of gravity pulls you back to the ground. We all know that gravity exists, whether we can see it with our eyes or not. Every second of every day, we experience gravity. We have faith that when we throw a ball into the air, gravity will bring it back to Earth.
The author of Hebrews says that faith is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” As Christians, we believe that God is real, even though we don’t usually see Him with our own eyes. Like gravity, we experience His power every day. We see the ways He moves and answers our prayers. We witness His creation. We pray to Him and seek a relationship with Him. We have conviction that, though we do not see God, He is there.
That is what faith is—believing in things not seen. On Sunday, we’ll open our Bibles and study stories of faith from Scripture. We’ll acknowledge the difficulties of faith while allowing God’s Word to shape and transform our hearts so that we may grow in faith ourselves.
